Botswana Caprivi Tour (16 days)

Day 1:

Arrival in Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) or Livingstone (Zambia). The afternoon you have plenty of time to see the gigantic Victoria Falls and the rain forest. According to many opinions the World Heritage Site Victoria Falls is the most impressive natural spectacle of in the world. Apart from the possibility to see the falls, there is a great deal of other activities you can take part in. For example helicopter flights over the falls, elephant riding, guided “lion walks”, boat cruises on the Zambezi River, bungee jumping from the bridge over the falls, wild water rafting, safaris in the Victoria Falls National Park and many more. Furthermore the arts and crafts market is worth visiting.

Day 2-3:

That day you drive through the Chobe Park to Namibia and reach the Kwando River. the afternoon. You go on a safari by an off-road vehicle in the Bwabwata National Park. In this almost remote national park you will hardly see other tourists. A lot of animals can always be seen at the legendary “Horseshoe Curve” of the Kwando River. Huge herds of elephants and buffaloes are not rare here. The boat cruises on the river arms of the Kwando River belong to the best in Africa. You can also fish from the boat (for example for the tiger fish). You will visit the “Historic Living Village of the Mafwe” (one of the tribes in the Caprivi) as well. There you gain insight of the traditional life and today’s life of the Mafwe. The focus is on learning something about their traditional way of living and their pre-colonial culture. The Mafwe are very lively and it is fun not only to watch them but also to join them. For example to dance or to mash millet with them. You can go fishing here as well (for tiger fish for example).

Day 4-5:

Tour to the Popa Falls and to the Mahango Game Park in the West of the Caprivi Region. Marshland, reed, green fields, palm trees, huge Baobab trees and papyrus. The Okavango River coins the image of the landscape. Elephants, buffaloes, antelopes, baboons, guenons, hippos, crocodiles, lions and other predators live there. Experience this landscape and its animals during a boat trip or safari and visit the Popa Falls’ rapids. You can go angling from a boat here as well (for example fishing for the tiger fish).

Day 6:

Tour to Botswana to the northern part of the Okavango-Delta. The Okavango River becomes broad and calm in the so-called “Pan Handle” of the delta before it branches out. You visit the Tsodilo Hills (World Heritage Site). The four huge isolated mountains rise from the plateau. The mountains play an important role in the culture of the San and the Hambukushu. It is said that this is a place of the Gods, a holy place whose legends are painted at rock faces and caves. You can see some of these paintings in a one-hour sightseeing tour.

Day 7-8:

We start early in the morning. By motor boat we advance into the delta. Then you change from the motor boat to a dugout canoe (“Mokoro”) and you will enjoy the calm journey to an island of the Okavango Delta where you will stay for the two next days. Safaris on foot or in the dugout canoe.

Day 9:

After the boat trip back from the island you go to Maun. The village is said to be the “gate to the Okavango Delta ”. If you want you can take part in a sightseeing flight over the delta.

Day 10:

In the early morning you start with a one-day trip to the Moremi Game Reserve. With its dry and wet savannas, the park is one of the largest and most varied in Southern Africa. About one third of the Okavango Delta is protected by the Moremi Game Reserve. During this one-day trip you learn a lot about the different living spaces of the delta and you have plenty of time to absorb all the impressions. Again and again you see flooded areas with large marshes, huge water fields full of water lilies, islands covered with palm trees and a unique variety of birds. If you are lucky, you see elephants, buffaloes, lions and leopards in the vast bush and tree savannas. You return to Maun in the afternoon.

Day 11:

Tour to the Makgadikgadi National Park. You go on long safari tours in the game reserve and along the Boteti River. You go hiking at the edge of the huge salt pan as well. Or you visit the Nxai Pan National Park and the Baine’s Boabab trees. Experience closely giraffes, zebras, antelopes, rhinos, elephants, lions, leopards and many more wild animals!

Day 12:

Tour to Nata and, as long there is water in the pans, to Nata’s bird sanctuary. More than 150 species of birds live in this sanctuary that consists of one half of grass land and one half of salt pan. In the afternoon you reach Kasane, a small village situated at the Chobe River. The same-named Chobe National Park, that is famous for its large herds of buffaloes and elephants (60,000 elephants), is not far away.

Day 13-14:

During a guided safari in an off-road vehicle in the Chobe National Park you closely see animals that usually do not come to the Chobe River. Especially in the mornings most of the animals graze so that you can perfectly observe them. Lions and other wild cats that like to spend their time in the shadows of bushes can be watched as well. In the afternoon there is a safari by boat (3 hours). It is easy to observe hippos and crocodiles in the vast river landscape. A lot of antelopes, buffaloes and elephants come to the shore in order to drink. It is a special event when elephants take a bath in the river or even swim through it. Birds can also be observed and heard well during the boat cruise (for example the African Fish Eagle with its distinctive cry).

Day 15:

Tour crossing the border to Zambia or Zimbabwe. There you visit the famous Victoria Falls. Apart from the possibility to see the falls, there is a great deal of other activities you can take part in. For example helicopter flights over the falls, elephant riding, guided “lion walks”, boat cruises on the Zambezi River, bungee jumping from the bridge over the falls, wild water rafting, safaris in the Victoria Falls National Park and many more. Furthermore the arts and crafts market is worth visiting.

Day 16:

Return flight from Victoria Falls (Zimbabwe) or Livingstone (Zambia) or you continue your stay, for example a tour through the Caprivi to Windhoek (Namibia) or a flight to Cape Town.
